Nipah (Nypa fruticans): can it be a renewable alternative energy source?

Abstract Nipah ( Nypa fruticans ) grows naturally in the mainland zone mangrove forests, but it can invade all disturbed forest zones as happened Air Telang Protected Forest (ATPF). has not been widely used by community and industry to make certain products. This study aims examine potential of nipah fruit shell fiber producing renewable energy. The method this research is an experimental making charcoal briquettes from be tested based on Indonesian National Standard (SNI). samples were taken ATPF then treated into laboratory. results test showed that moisture content, ash density compressive strength met SNI requirements, calorific value was still below requirements. These indicate have a energy source through more appropriate treatment for increasing heating value.
